The two matches will be played on Saturday, December 31, 2022. The national championship will be followed by the national championship on Monday, January 9, 2023.
The CFP Selection Committee has the final say on which teams qualify for the 2022-23 College Football game. But the category at the top of this page will be updated after each week of the 2022-23 college football season with the country’s current top four teams.

Prior to the college football game, the BCS National Championship was in effect from 1998 to 2014. There was no official National Championship game prior to 1998.
How many teams qualify for a college football game?
Currently, only four teams qualify for the college football game and maintain a chance of winning the National Championship. The NCAA is expanding CFP to 12 teams in the future (more on that below) but that’s still at least two years out.

In contrast to the early BCS era (1999-2006) when the current bowl game functioned as a title game, the title game for each season has been known simply as the National Championship game since the 2006-07 NCAAF season.

When is the college football game expanded?
The plan at the moment is to expand the College Football Playoff to 12 teams starting in the 2026 regular season. However, the powers that be will consider the possibility of implementing an expanded postseason sooner (either 2024 or 2025). But the 12-team playoff is still two seasons away at the earliest.
How do teams qualify for the college football game?
The only way to qualify for the current iteration of the college football game is for it to be selected by the CFP Selection Committee. The committee consists of 13 members.
