As AI improves, engineers need to step up. Carnegie Mellon University the new Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence Engineering (MS AIE) It combines the fundamentals of AI and machine learning with knowledge of the engineering field and culminates in an integrated capstone project – in other words, the scarce knowledge to develop and apply AI-based solutions in an engineering context.

MS AIE core courses cover the fundamentals of machine learning along with the systems and tool chains needed to work with artificial intelligence systems. “Aside from these basics, students can choose from a wide range of elective courses and a capstone project course that allows them to focus on specific sub-disciplines of civil and environmental engineering and learn to leverage AI solutions in these contexts,” he says. Burgess. The program also teaches students to embrace the ethics or policy considerations that are critical in solution-driven fields such as engineering.
As graduates of the MS AIE, they are set to gain the upper hand when they apply for high-demand positions in the field of Civil and Environmental Engineering. “With these skills, graduates will be able to pursue innovative career paths in areas such as intelligent transportation systems, structural health control, facility management and environmental data analysis, to name a few,” Burgess. More specific examples of industrial positions in these areas include Advanced Analytics Research Scientist, Deep Learning Research Engineer, 3D Process Engineer, and Bioinformatics Quality Engineer.
