Josh Allen warned against “taking too many a hit” as it becomes impossible to ignore Cam Newton’s parallels

Josh Allen Every time he seemed to be a candidate for the best player in the first week Victory over Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

The Buffalo Bills quarterback put his arm on full screen in a 297-yard, three-touchdown effort as the All-Pro Cornerback Galen Ramsey had no answer. Accuracy that has become a hallmark of his development as an NFL quarterback with a completion rate of 83.9% (26 out of 31) assigned A franchise record for a regular season game.

When the Rams took the deep ball, he didn’t force things. when they didn’t, make them pay. And when did he run? Well good luck.

That’s over eight times over, and All-Pro streak player Bobby Wagner epitomizes Josh Allen’s experience. His classic midfield skills – arm strength, accuracy, field drive – make him special. Add his physical presence as a ball bearer, and he makes a short list of the NFL’s elite talents.

This style of play is also the biggest concern in Buffalo. Allen led the Bills in the Thursday rush with 10 buggies for 56 yards, including a 4-yard result. There had been more than one occasion when he seemed to be seeking contact. In doing so, he has subjected himself to frequent physical punishment that raises short and long-term concerns about his health.

Can Allen stay healthy with his style of play?

Short-term concerns are clear. Billing entered the season in the name of The Super Bowl is my favourite. Nothing from the first week changed this condition. Buffalo has a solid defense, a respected coach in Shawn McDermott and a talented team of playmakers that includes Stevon Diggs, Gabe Davis and Dawson Knox.

But make no mistake. Allen is the No. 1 reason Buffalo’s status as a favorite in the Super Bowl. If he sustains a major injury during the season, Kees Keenum will take charge at the quarterback, and Buffalo’s dreams of championships will be shattered.

Allen is aware of the concerns. His fitness has been a special part of his game since he joined the NFL in 2018. He addressed them on Wednesday after showing last week to a prime-time audience that renewed concerns.

“I think I could be better in that aspect,” Allen to reporters At a press conference on Wednesday. “But given the circumstances he was in, and understanding the flow of the match, I do things sometimes that are necessary in my eyes to help our team win a football match. That’s it.

“But at the end of the day, availability is the best ability. So, just understand that — and go down and not get a lot of results, obviously that happens year after year.”

Allen’s “year in and year out” confession addresses long-term concerns. Even if he goes through this season in relatively good health and with a Super Bowl episode, the cumulative effect of the crashes he endures is bound to have a negative impact. Look no further than Cam Newton.

Injuries eventually affected Cam Newton

Newton joined the Carolina Panthers in 2011 as a rookie with a profile similar to that of Allen. Allen stands 6-foot-5, 237 pounds with an arm cannon and back-running skills. Newton weighs 6-5 and 245 pounds. Likewise, join the league with arm cannon and running back skills.

Newton exceeded expectations that came with his first place in the draft pick as his unparalleled skills led to the rookie of the year honour. 706 yards and 14 touchdowns could have put him on the floor alone in contention for the prize.

In each of his first five seasons, he ran the ball more than 100 times a year with streaming totals ranging from 585 to 741 yards. At his best in 2015, he was the league’s best player and led his team to the Super Bowl. He was a Pro Bowl level quarterback and had Carolina’s best run wrapped into one package.

But it was not sustainable. Injuries escalated. His performance showed signs of waning in 2016, a year into his MVP campaign and his sixth season in the NFL. In 2019, admit it He played through lingering shoulder issues Since the 2016 season, a period that saw pitch accuracy decline. It wasn’t just his shoulder. There was likewise foot injuriesAnd the walking shoesAnd the concussions And the Ankle surgery.

In 2017, anonymous team officials whispered Fears that his body was collapsing. In 2020, team owner David Tepper said the quiet part out loud when asked about Newton’s future with the franchise. his response: “is he in a good health?”

He was not. Newton played only two games in the previous season, and Finally released the leopards The best player in franchise history after nine seasons in Charlotte. Newton went on to take on Tom Brady in New England on an eight-point pass and 10 dropped interceptions before returning to the Carolinas for what was a nostalgic run as he replaced injured Sam Darnold in 2021. A week into the 2022 campaign, Newton is not on the league roster American football.

This is the fate he wants Bills from Allen to avoid. In his first four seasons, Allen averaged 105.5 yards and 581 rushing yards per year. Most of these end with a blow. That’s in addition to the 118 extra bags and quarterbacks you carry. So far, he’s relatively unscathed, as Newton did during his first five seasons.

Does Newton’s career path mean that Allen will follow the same path? of course not. But it is impossible to ignore parallels. Meanwhile, Allen’s physical on-field tournaments continue to garner well-deserved praise and celebration.

There is no easy answer because Allen’s play continues to have wins and highlights. But both Allen and Beals must strive to strike the right balance.
