Reversing a fatal genetic disorder with lifestyle medicine

There is nothing more important you can give a patient than hope.

In 2010, the Smith family did not have much hope. Their 13-year-old son underwent a series of abnormal laboratory tests that eventually led to a hopeless diagnosis. He was diagnosed with myelodysplastic dysplasia (MDS) and given a poor prognosis by an oncologist.

The survival rate is close to the heart of the coin. There is a slight advantage for children who undergo a successful bone marrow transplant; For the rest of the children, the survival rate is dismal. Basically, treatment is very expensive and many lose their children.

While many of you may not have heard of this condition before, it is the number one cancer among children in the United States. Myelodysplasia It usually leads to complete leukemia. [1]

This would be alarming were it not for the fact that cancer has reached epidemic proportions among all age groups since the 1940s. Nearly a hundred years ago, cancer rates were about 1 in 8000 with childhood cancers almost unheard of. Fast forward to 2014 and cancer rates rose to unacceptable rates of 1 in 2 Americans, with childhood cancers becoming more common. MDS/leukemia accounts for the majority of pediatric cancers, slightly higher than brain (CNS) cancers. As of today, 1 in 10,000 children is expected to develop cancer each year. [2]

Son Smith was diagnosed by aspiration of bone marrow from his pelvis. The results showed that the cause of his cancer was an abnormal mutation in the chromosome at 9q (J-3396, J-6911 and K-5930). This means that every time the bone marrow tries to make normal cells, the coding is broken. This explains the abnormal cell lines that result in leukocytosis, leukocytosis, polychromacy, leukopenia, neutropenia, refractory anemia or, in more common terms, whose cells were malfunctioning. Each year, a bone marrow aspiration test showed the same result, 100% of the abnormal 46 XY karyotype with the same mutated DNA.

Two years later, after attending one of the Food as Medicine seminars, Mrs. Smith called me to see if I could help her son. I told her something no other specialist had said, genes can be fixed. Finally, there was some cautious hope in her eyes. I explained that every time a cell divides, it will either produce the same mutation or it will fix the mutation. I told her that a surge is a natural thing that the body has to deal with every day. We will only end up with such mutations or chronic diseases after exposure to chemical toxicities overwhelms our nutritional capacity. This process is called Epigenetics.

Epigenetics is the fascinating process by which the body turns genes on and off through carbon metabolism. By understanding how the body can assist with genetic genetic manipulation, a clinician can help restore mutations and unfavorable genetic sequences. [3] This whole process is why my identical twin daughters are a little different as they get older. Their DNA is 100% identical but through environmental factors, diet and lifestyle, their DNA sequence has evolved to allow for these slight differences. So without being overly complicated, this means Mrs. Smith’s son can improve his DNA and cancel his chromosome mutation.

After a long discussion with the family I knew we were on a deadline. The next chromosome test was 6 months later. Because of the seriousness of this condition, I have done some additional research and developed a comprehensive treatment plan that will have success in the allotted time. Since I am a functional lifestyle medicine physician, the focus was on food that would provide enhanced genetic potential while removing the most likely causes of DNA mutation.

So what is the likely cause of her son’s cancer? The main cause of the surge with MDS is exposure to chemicals such as benzene or its derivatives. [4,5] Since benzene is a highly flammable component of crude oil, you would think exposure to such a volatile chemical would be rare, especially in children. This would be true except for the fact that many food companies use gasoline derivatives to preserve your food.

If you look at food labels, you may notice chemicals like benzoate, benzoic acid, or BHT. To make these common preservatives, you must start by converting benzene into toluene. This is the chemical responsible for the smell in paint thinner. Now by oxidizing toluene it can be converted into benzoate or benzoic acid. [5] They then add this petroleum derivative to foods, beverages, and even nutritional supplements to increase profitability by providing an unnaturally longer shelf life. It can be done with ascorbic acid or citric acids too but gasoline is cheaper and therefore more profitable.

This is why these benzene-derived preservatives are so toxic to our DNA. For MDS patients, avoiding these chemical preservatives is one of the most important places to start. Next we want to restore normal DNA through diet.

My food goal is Balancing the methylation process To improve genetic signaling while improving the body’s ability to repair and edit mutated DNA. This was achieved by switching the patient to a low-glycemic, nutrient-rich diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, berries and legumes. Real real food with minimal processing. Then we continued with methylcobalamin (methyl B12 lozenges), folic acid supplements, and B6. Each of these help regulate the homocysteine ​​pathway that regulates the gene sequence. This carbon metabolism is usually fueled by a diet rich in beans, vegetables, and fermented foods. [8]

One of the most important processes is the re-establishment of the normal microbiome of gut bacteria. The human body is only 1/10 that of humans, meaning that for every human cell, we should have 10 beneficial bacteria that take care of us. There are about three pounds of bacteria in and on the human body. This includes a variety of 750 different strains of good bacteria. [6] All designed to keep us happy and healthy. Not only do these probiotics aid in the digestion of our food and provide the bulk of our immunity, but most importantly they provide us with a continuous production of B vitamins. These vitamins help regulate DNA. Don’t forget that these probiotics also digest the oligosaccharides from undigested fibrous foods (prebiotics) which then produce chemicals that fuel our DNA polymerase. DNA polymerase is the safe guard of DNA mutation. It edits the mutated DNA with each replication. This is how we improve DNA over time. [7]

What does all this mean? Well, after 6 months, the boy got new DNA extracted from his hip. When the results come in, even the oncologist didn’t know what to say; The results were 100% normal DNA. The following year, the parents retested to make sure the change was still going and, again, 100% normal DNA.

Through dietary and lifestyle changes, their son was able to heal his DNA and beat cancer. Hope prevailed.

The moral of this story is that you are not broken or damaged. You are genetically designed to heal. Your physiology is designed to overcome them and make you stronger. Disease is just the result of living a lifestyle that is incompatible with life and longevity. If your current doctor is only helping you manage your condition with medication rather than reversing it, you may want to find a new one.
