South Point 400 DFS: DraftKings, FanDuel Daily Fantasy NASCAR’s lineup picks

The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Las Vegas on Sunday to begin Round 8. Chase Elliott, Joey Logano, Ross Chastain, Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney, William Byron, Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe are still alive in the title race. Of these, only Elliott and Lugano have won titles before.

Earlier this year Alex Bowman won in Vegas, but he will miss that race as he is recovering from concussion symptoms. Among the qualifier drivers, here Hamlin and Lugano won the cup, while Briscoe and Chastain won the Xfinity.

Denny Hamlin

31st Starts – DraftKings $11,100 | FanDuel $14,000

The qualifying results for this race… are interesting. We have the front row of Tyler Reddick and Austin Cindric, plus Harrison Burton and Austin Dillon in the top 10, and then we have Chase Elliott starting at number 20 and Denny Hamlin starting at number 31.

Elliott and Hamlin should both be in some of your lineups, but I’m highlighting Hamlin here because he has an additional 11 points from the rookie teams, which could come into play.

Hamlin is the former winner here, winning this race last season in dominant fashion, driving 137 laps. He could have won back-to-back here after driving 31 laps in this spring’s race, but the powertrain issue ended his day early. This broke a streak of three greatest fives in a row here.

In fact, Hamlin led two-digit laps on four straight starts in Vegas, and three-digit laps in two of them. This has been a relatively poor trajectory for Hamlin for years. He didn’t drive a single lap in his first seven starts. He’s had a few runs where he’ll get one in the top 10 every five or so races here. But this 11 team recently changed that luck.

Ross Chastain

Eleventh starts – Draftskings $9,900 | FanDuel $11,500

Chastain in the quarter-finals! Who would have thought that would be true before this season when he never won a cup race, or even during this season when he was making enemies for everyone.

But he’s here. With his biggest “enemy” Denny Hamlin also still alive in the knockout race, I think we can probably consider Chastain safe to pay off for at least the next few races.

Chastain took a win here at Xfinity and almost won here in the spring, driving 83 laps and finishing third. This was his first Top 10 in the Cup Series at this track, but it’s really hard to hold his past against him, considering the level of equipment he’s been driving in the past. Focus on the present, which is that Ross Chastain is fast here. There is also a small upside differential in place – GPP can be gained or lost those few pips there.

Martin Truex Jr.

Starts 27 – DraftKings $9,100 | FanDuel $10,000

Truex is going through its worst season in a long time. His average finish is 15.3, which is his lowest score since 2014, and his first season with Furniture Row. His last four games of the season are 36, 31, 26 and 17. Things are not going well!

I’m a Truex subscriber on Sunday though, because there’s a lot of differential upside to place when Joe Gibbs’ car starts in 27th. And we’re in Las Vegas, where Truex has historically done really well.

Truex is a two-time winner here and has finished in the top ten on 57.1% of his starts in Vegas – and that takes into account his starts for DEI, when he was zero to 5 in the top 10.

Since joining JGR in 2019, Truex has made seven starts here, with one finishing outside the top ten. He was eighth here earlier this season.

Joey Logano

Fifth starts – DraftKings $8900 | FanDuel $9200

I think there are some interesting positive aspects with Lugano. You mentioned in the Hamlin section that there is a very strange starting lineup here. Even the two qualifying drivers who start before Lugano – William Byron and Ryan Blaney – aren’t among the best. There is a chance for Lugano to go out early and compete for that victory.

Given that he’s a two-time winner here, it wouldn’t come as a huge shock. Lugano has been down in Vegas for the last four races here, but before that, he’s had nine of his top 10 consecutive races at the track, including two wins. He had a five-race streak where he led at least 25 laps. The point is that Lugano knows how to win here. If you think he has a chance to do it again on Sunday, there is some good value here.

Justin Haley

28th Starts – DraftKings $5800 | FanDuel 4000 dollars

If you’ve wondered why this article is loaded with high-priced plays, it’s because there are two valuable people I really like this week.

Let’s start with Justin Haley, who has been quietly very good over the past month or so. Haley has four consecutive Top 15s, and six consecutive Top 20s. These have come on a variety of tracks: Darlington, KS, Bristol, Texas, Talladega and Roval. His third in Texas could be a bit misleading as he came in a strange race that saw 27.2% of the race run under caution and an average green flag run of 14.3 laps, but he was still third at an intermediate circuit.

Haley advances in twenty-eighth place. He has some differential in place really well based on his results in the last race.

Todd Gilliland

35 Starts – DraftKings $5200 | FanDuel $3500

Gilliland is clearly not as strong as Haley’s, but I still think there is a lot of upside with this 38 car, as Gilliland will come out of 35th on Sunday.

It’s hard to spot where this team is because Gilliland’s finishes were all over the place. But he has averaged a finish of 23.0 this season, which is slightly ahead of his starting average of 27.3. And that’s something I like to see with a man of value: that he can constantly run to where he starts.

Gilliland finished 23rd here earlier this season, finishing the race on a lap. It was his third start in the Trophy Series ever. Most recently, it was ranked 23rd in Kansas, a track that has some similarities to this track.
