WTA Tokyo Quarter-Final Predictions Including Samsonova vs Muguruza

It was an exciting tennis week at the WTA Tokyo Open. The quarter-final lineup promises to be equally exciting, with star players across the board. As always, here at LWOT we will be giving our predictions for today’s play. But who will reach the semi-finals?

WTA Tokyo Quarter Final Predictions

Petra Martic vs Zhang Shuai

face to face: Martic 2-0 Chang

This must be a great match. Petra Martic thrillingly beat sixth seed Karolina Pliskova in straight sets and has been very dominant so far this week. Zhang Shuai came through with a giant showdown with Garcia, finishing the job in the final set tiebreak. Both players discover an impressive level later in their careers.

The only major draw meeting between these two in 2019 was in Miami, which Martic won very comfortably. Zhang has been very consistent and solid lately, but this could be a tough match for her. Martic can hit hard and outsmart her opponents, and I’ll give her an edge here – although it should be a great competition.

Veronika Kudermitova vs Beatrice Haddad Maya

face to face: first meeting

This makes every encounter wonderful. Both players are equipped with massive weapons that can eliminate their opponents from the field. Veronika Kudermetova was quite tough against Gomez, losing only one match. Beatriz mourning Maya, who is having a great year, was ready for a tough showdown with Osaka, only for the Japanese star to quit sick.

Kudermetova looked great in New York, and she barely faced a challenge until finalist Ons Jabeur beat her in two tight sets in the fourth round. Haddad Maya plays great tennis but there are still question marks about her ability to make consistent deep runs. I think Kudermetova will be very strong here, as her level indicates that only an elite player can take her out now.

Prediction: Kudermetova at 3

Lyudmila Samsonova vs. Garbin Muguruza

face to face: Samsonova 1-0 Muguruza

I am intrigued to see how this happens. Garbine Muguruza had a bleak year to say the least, although she played passably in New York where she made it to the third round. However, the Spaniard is far from at her best now, and a big run is needed sometime soon if she is to finish the season with any real credit. Unfortunately for her, she’s been facing an in-form player on tour for the past few months.

Ludmilla Samsonova is in electric now, perfectly crushing the ball with impressive consistency. If she’s at her game, I don’t think there’s much Muguruza can do to challenge her in this current state. If Muguruza finds some form and confidence, we could see an exciting match, but the Russian player is still my choice.

Prediction: Samsonova at 2

Cheng Chenwen vs. Claire Liu

face to face: first meeting

Zheng Qinwen has to be one of the most exciting prospects in tennis these days. Ball’s formidable aura, consistency, and confidence attracts a lot of buzz and attention, and it’s easy to see why. After sweeping Misaki Doi aside, she beat top seed Paula Padusa impressively.

Claire Liu is having an excellent week too, and at 22 years old, her future is undoubtedly bright. She hasn’t had any issues with Riske or Mertens, which suggests she’s ready for this too. I can see it’s a tight match because Leo has a lot at her game to annoy her opponents, but Zheng is the star of the future and this should be hers.

Prediction: Zheng in 3
